Serving Sizes

This recipe “serves 4″. What the heck is a “serving” anyway?

If you look at it this way, a typical dinner would include a starch, a vegatable, a meat and a small salad. This means that you plate will hold 3-4 servings of food. This would be a typical meal.

Now if you look at a recipe, such as a pasta recipe, you will notice a pound of pasta will serve about 6 people. An that will be true if you are serving pasta, with a vegatable and a serving of meat. But many times, pasta is the meal (along with a salad, right). So one serving of pasta does not equal one meal… especially if you are cooking for a family that has growing boys.

Make sense?

Look at servings as you would if you split your dinner plate into three sections. Each one holding a serving. When it comes to watching your weight, a variety of foods, one serving each makes sense. But when feeding a family… plan on a couple extra servings.

  • Weight Loss Tip of the Day
    • Fruit juice isn't as healthy as most people think either. Juice actually has a lot of sugar in it as well. If you are craving a glass of juice, drink fresh fruit juice instead of juice that has artificial flavors and coloring.
It is even better if you can make your own fruit juice. Just be sure not to add too much sugar which adds to the calories. Instead of drink fruit juice, eat more fruit. Fruit provides your body with much needed fiber as well as vitamins.
