Serving Sizes

This recipe “serves 4″. What the heck is a “serving” anyway?

If you look at it this way, a typical dinner would include a starch, a vegatable, a meat and a small salad. This means that you plate will hold 3-4 servings of food. This would be a typical meal.

Now if you look at a recipe, such as a pasta recipe, you will notice a pound of pasta will serve about 6 people. An that will be true if you are serving pasta, with a vegatable and a serving of meat. But many times, pasta is the meal (along with a salad, right). So one serving of pasta does not equal one meal… especially if you are cooking for a family that has growing boys.

Make sense?

Look at servings as you would if you split your dinner plate into three sections. Each one holding a serving. When it comes to watching your weight, a variety of foods, one serving each makes sense. But when feeding a family… plan on a couple extra servings.
